Hey! Want to print your art beautifully? We've got some tips to make your life easier...
Printable art is a new and revolutionary way to purchase art.
What is a printable?
Printables are artworks you can buy online and print from your home printer or at a print shop. They're affordable and accessible, so you can switch up your gallery wall whenever you like.
How do I download my printable art?
When you purchase a printable from Upscale Printable Art, it will be available as an instant download. All you need to do is download the file from the downloads page that will come up once you've paid. The download link will also be sent to your email inbox and/or phone.
What is a .zip file and how do I open it?
A .zip file contains files of the same artwork in six different aspect ratios compressed together. To open the .zip file and access to your printables, double-click on it (Mac) or right-click on it and select "Extract All" (PC) so that your computer will unzip the file to reveal the artworks inside.
Most operating systems, including Windows and Mac OS, are able to unzip the file without the need for any 3rd-party software. However, if you need software to unzip your file. There are many free versions such as WinRAR, PeaZip, and iZIP. These apps also have mobile versions for iPhones and Androids.
What is an aspect ratio?
No need to worry about cropping files to fit the aspect ratio of your frame! Our printables all come in all the most common aspect ratios. All you need to do is select the one that fits your frame.
We understand that aspect ratio (and how it applies to prints) can be confusing. It is the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image.
For example, if you want to print your printable to fit a 50x70cm frame, choose the 5x7 aspect ratio file. Similarly, if you want your print to measure 24x36 in, use the 2x3 aspect ratio file.
Our printables come in aspect ratios that match the most popular standard frame sizes: 2x3, 3x4, 5x7, A (ISO), 4x5 and 11x14.
Here's a guide to some aspect ratios and their respective popular frame sizes.
2x3: 12x18in ; 16x24in ; 20x30cm ; 24x36in
3x4: 12x16in ; 18x24in ; 30x40cm
5x7: 10x14in ; 20x28in ; 50x70cm
A: All ISO sizes: A8, A7, A6, A5, A4, A3
4x5: 8x10in ; 16x20in ; 24x30in
You can also measure the length and width of your frame and enter them into this calculator to simplify the ratio.
What are resolution and DPI?
Unless stated otherwise, all our printables are large enough to print at 50in / 127cm on the longest edge at 300 dpi. DPI stands for the number of dots in a printed inch and is used to determine image resolution. The higher the DPI, the sharper your image will look. 300 dpi is the optimal size for a clear and crisp picture. Images with a dpi of 150 or lower will look pixelated and blurry.
What kind of paper should I choose to print my artwork?
For a high-quality print, we recommend printing on thick, heavy cardstock paper with a minimum weight of 230gsm. Printing on heavy paper will give your print rigidity and prevent curling and warping. We also recommend matte finish paper, especially for artwork and typography prints, as they create a smooth, crisp look. We don't recommend using gloss, semi-gloss, or photo paper as they reflect too much light which will make your artwork look less appealing.
What kind of ink should I use to print my artwork?
Pigment-based inks offer more professional results and last much longer than dye inks. The pigments are tiny particles that sit on the paper and bond with the fibers. They are also waterproof and chemical-free.
I don't want to print the artwork myself - where can I get it printed?
If you don't want to print at home, you can have your artwork printed at your local print shop or via an online printing service. Just ensure that you choose good quality paper as outlined above.
